What Really Happens in Your First Therapy Session

Booking a first session with a psychologist is often the hardest part, and a big reason people put it off is simply not knowing what to expect. Here's a straightforward look at what actually happens, so there are fewer unknowns before you walk in.

Before you arrive

Most practices ask you to complete some paperwork beforehand. This gathers, basic details, a short intake form about what's brought you in, and information about privacy and fees. This isn't a test; it just gives your psychologist some context so the session itself can focus on you rather than admin.

You don't need to have it all figured out

A common worry is not knowing how to explain what's going on, or feeling like the issue isn't big enough to justify being there. In reality, the first session is largely about your psychologist getting to know you: your history, what's currently going on, and what you're hoping to get out of therapy. It's completely normal to say 'I'm not sure where to start.'

What the conversation tends to cover

Expect some questions about your current situation, relevant history, and what support (if any) you've had before. A good psychologist will also check in about pace (i.e., how much detail you're comfortable sharing early on) rather than expecting everything to come out in the first fifty minutes.

What happens after

Towards the end of the session, many psychologists will talk through a loose plan: how often you might meet, what approach could be useful, and what the next session might focus on. This isn't set in stone; it's a starting point that shifts as they get to know you better.

It's okay if it doesn't feel right

Sometimes a first session confirms a great fit, and sometimes it doesn't, and that's a completely valid outcome too. Finding the right therapist can take a session or two, and a good psychologist won't take it personally if you decide to look elsewhere.
