What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based form of therapy that helps people identify and change unhelpful thoughts, behaviours, and emotions. It focuses on the connection between how we think, feel, and act, teaching people practical strategies to manage challenges and improve wellbeing

These days, CBT is an umbrella term, encompassing many different sub-types of therapy, such as:

  • Cognitive Therapy

  • Behaviour Therapy

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

  • Schema Therapy

  • Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)

  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

  • Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)

  • Cognitive Analytic Therapy

  • Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)

  • Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT)

By challenging negative thought patterns and developing strategies to reframe thoughts, CBT is a fantastic therapy often used in the management of anxiety, depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), phobias, stress, and other mental health concerns.

How Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) works

CBT works by combining the following three components:

Understand unhelpful patterns

Developing healthier thinking

Develop healthier behaviours

Gain greater awareness of how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours influence each other and which thoughts are keeping you stuck â€‹

Get curious about where unhelpful thoughts come from. Challenge the assumptions underlying these. Reframe your thoughts and develop healthier patterns of relating to the world

Learn skills to help improve distress tolerance and emotion regulation, resulting in less emotional reactivity or avoidance of fears. Learn life hacks to improve motivation and be your best self

No, you don’t need a referral to see a CBT therapist. However, if you want to claim Medicare rebates, we recommend discussing your eligibility for a Mental Health Treatment Plan with your GP.
